Chemical Engine House 44 was originally built in 1909 and served as a San Francisco firehouse until 1959. The architecture and lighting design challenge was how to renovate a unique historic structure into a modern residence while maintaining the essence of its historic charm. Although the wiring and lighting are all new, original details like copper and zinc doors, brass pole, call box, spiral steel staircase and original façade were maintained. The 6,500sf transformation included installation of expansive windows, skylights, transparent bridge and stair landings to allow natural light to flow throughout the space. Efficient artificial lighting consumes a modest .9w/sf.
